This film by the great Andrzej Wajda is about the desperate calvary battles against the Nazi blitzkrieg, told from the “view” of a horse that keeps losing its owner to attrition. The movie is dark, poignant, and bitter. The director’s father was killed under the same circumstances portrayed. So this movie, as with many contemporary Polish films, is intensely personel.
