Lara Croft Tomb Raider

Got this DVD in original wrapper at the Hillsborough Swapshop the other day. I had never seen the movie before, ever. Well this kitty kicks butt. Like National Treasure and other Indiana Jones kin, this is archeaology fully loaded. Lady Croft is smart, beautiful, and incredibly athletic. She pursues treasure with a swath of destruction and an attitude. Despite its kitsch, Lara Croft has pretty non-stop action, making it very watchable. A final plus is one of her sidekicks, Henry, played by Chris Barrie (now called Christopher Barrie). Chris played with great aplomb Mr. Rimmer on the BBC’s space comedy show Red Dwarf. Now he is the steady butler to Lady Croft. And he takes shotgun to intruders with gusto and glee. Good to see the Red Dwarf boys are still in the thick of things.

This spoofy, goofy Western is both classy on one level and boorish and inane on another. The male lead played by Tab Hunter is a fairly aloof drifter who rides into town, a town of mouthy whores and a very loud, obnoxious Mexican bandit played by a way over the top Henry Silva (irritating, yet vaguely entertaining). There is the consummate treasure, a limerick, Scottish geography, and posterior map reading—this does not take into account a helping of double crossing, a midget, a less than predictable ending, and innuendo galore. If not adult, at least for mid-teen onward. Lust in the Dust is racy, sassy, and in the Blazing Saddles camp of campy Western humor.
